Thanksgiving Service Project

At one GFS branch, the church sits next to a Senior Living Manor. The residents are able to cook and take care of themselves, but their socially lives are limited. The girls of this GFS branch likes to drop off little gifts from time to time to cheer up the residents. There are only 38 residents, so it is manageable to make a handcrafted item for each one. When girls make the handicraft, they use small motor skills, are able to be creative by making variations on the main them, and spend a lot of time laughing and talking while they work. The results are girls with a sense of accomplishment and seniors with a special surprise on their doorstep. Often we receive a thank you note signed by all of the residents of the manor!

This year, one of the girls suggested that our Thanksgiving craft be a turkey made from Oreos. After a little research on the Pinterest app, we found the design she was thinking of. It was simple for all ages to make (our members range from 6 to 13 years old), not too expensive to purchase the ingredients, and very cute! Her idea fit the bill!

At our next meeting, we got to work making and packaging the turkeys.

The ingredients are simple:

  • Double stuffed Oreos
  • Candy Corn
  • Pretzels
  • Icing in can
  • Paper plates
  • Plastic wrap
  • Gift labels
